fear of flying

Fear of flying has very little to do with the plane crashing but a lot to do with other factors. Traditional fear of flying courses seem to concentrate on this particular aspect but having successfully provided hypnotherapy for the fear of flying to people experiencing this type of anxiety for over nine years now, I have found a multitude of reasons why people are terrified of getting on that plane.

It can involve:

  • The person being a nervous flyer because they suffer from claustrophobia
  • A person who does not like to be in a situation where they feel they are not in control
  • A fear of turbulence

and not just the feelings of movement but also the associated fears of vomiting, witnessing others vomiting, or a fear of not being able to get to the toilet in the plane because of seat belt warnings. As you can see, helping a person to overcome Fear of Flying is therefore not a straight-forward process and requires specialist therapy.

Fear of flying is generally accepted as one of the most common phobias. Several studies have found that up to 40 percent of people have some degree of anxiety about flying, said Dr. Lucas van Gerwen, an aviation psychologist and professional pilot. The reasons for a fear of flying have their roots in a person's childhood experiences.

*"I've been terrified of flying all my life, absolutely terrified. When I got this job I knew I'd have to fly, which I hadn't done for years, but I couldn't turn it down.

I've done every type of therapy, fear of flying courses, in-flight simulators, I've had drugs, hypnosis, everything, but then somebody recommended a regressive hypnotherapist called David Samson who I saw for eight sessions over three months. The idea is that your fear is learnt behaviour and that you weren't born scared of flying. It's hard to explain to someone who isn't afraid of flying, but whatever he did, it worked.

Last October I went to Tokyo and when it was bumpy on the return flight I slept all the way back, whereas normally I'd be in physical pain and completely terrified, unable to do anything"

Have you ever experienced a panic attack whilst flying and does that thought stick in your mind?

When you are laying on the beach, does the thought of the return journey play on your mind?

Here are a couple of client reviews...

Hi David,

*Hope you're well. Just a quick one to say I've very successfully completed 10 flights since I last saw you with no problems. A definite awareness of turbulence but certainly no gripping, tapping or anxiety.

I'd call it very successful and am hoping it carries on now for the future!

Talk soon and thanks for all your help,

Greg.

Dear David,

*I really don't know how to thank you!

I did 2 direct 11 hour flights to the Maldives, taking care of the boys, with no Xanax or drunkeness. There was even turbulence and a woman having a panic attack on the plane!

Nothing set me off. I ate a whole meal, read a book and felt alternatingly so happy I could cry or I felt bored. I feel liberated and as if my life has transformed. I am planning holidays with no fear or dread. My son even said 'this is bumpy' at some stage and I just said 'a little bit of wind, nothing else' and felt completely calm. I don't know if I would have even been capable of speech in the old days

THANK YOU!

How can hypnotherapy help me to get over fear of flying?..

Some hypnotherapy techniques involve the therapist suggesting that the fear has disappeared. In my experience this is not the solution, because the root cause of the fear will still be present.

I believe that the only solution is to address the causes of the fear. Most likely these are lodged in the subconscious mind and have been there since the person was a young child. Sometimes these fears remain un-triggered in the subconscious for years, but a trauma in later life, such as a bad experience on a flight can cause this fear to trigger and become a major issue in that person's life. This isn't a complicated process and can sometimes be treated in only a few sessions.
